Are 3d tv’s harmful to Eyes and health ?

August 7, 2010 in 3D tv, Big Boys Toys, Electronics

Most 3d tvs come with a warning  that continuous watching of 3d tv can cause  dizziness , nausea etc . The frenzy has started!! With the availability of 3D television, the world is a-buzz with the idea of this life-changing technology.

At the CES show in Las Vegas last January, all anybody could talk about were the new 3D televisions that were being exhibited by Samsung, Sony, Toshiba and any other company that had anything to do with LCD technology.

3D Tv warnings for health

I was as blown away by Avatar 3D as anybody else; after being turned away from my local theatre twice because of crowds, I finally got into a showing and had the time of my life watching aliens zoom around the screen in 3D and  It’s really  cool.

3D programming is scarce. It will take years for the technology to be adopted by broadcaster and cable channels, if it is at all.

Photosensitive Seizure Warning and Other Health Risks

3d tv harmful to eyes and health

  • Some viewers may experience an epileptic seizure or stroke when exposed to certain flashing images or lights contained in certain television pictures or video games. If you or any of your family has a history of epilepsy or stroke, please consult with a medical specialist before using the 3D function.
  • Watching TV while wearing 3D Active Glasses for an extended period of time may cause headaches or fatigue. If you experience a headache, fatigue or dizziness, stop watching TV and rest.

The market for 3D televisions is still very young, but the availability of 3D content is expected to drive sales upward in the coming months and years. Samsung’s competitors in the 3D market include Sony and Panasonic. Analysts expect that the annual growth rate of consumer spending on 3D technology will rise about 80% this year. Perhaps Samsung’s warnings are a pre-emptive strike against possible lawsuits from people who try to get too much of a good thing

Virtual Reality expert Mark Pesce claims that constant exposure to 3D TV can be harmful to the brain Mark says that even though 3D TV is touted as the ‘in’ thing today, none of the TV manufacturers have done any health testing on it. He adds that while a few hours every few weeks of 3D watching may not cause too much harm, watching it daily, especially with a few channels like Discovery announcing 3D broadcasts in the next few months, could cause permanent impairment in kids.

“How to hack a ATM”

August 2, 2010 in Big Boys Toys, Electronics, SOFTWARE

Yes that’s right  !! Jack, speaking at the “Black Hat Security Conference in Las Vegas” , was able to hack ATMs using a $10 master key available online

Your money: May not be as safe as you think. Security expert Barnaby Jack showed off three different ways to hack an ATM last week, including one particularly flashy method that left the machine playing music and spitting out twenties.he had brought on stage both physically.

He was also able to hack it remotely, so long as he knew the machine’s phone number or IP address. The second method allowed him to gain access to previous users’ stored PINs.

Patches have already been developed the systems, built by ATM-makers Triton and and Tranax, Jack said. Triton patched the issue in November 2009, said Bob Douglas, Triton’s vice president of engineering.

Here is the video Demonstration to hack ATM showed at the DEFCON Security conference

Exploiting bugs in two different ATM machines, the researcher from IOActive was able to get them to spit out money on demand and record sensitive data from the cards of people who used them. He showed the attacks on two systems he had purchased himself — the type of generic ATM machines typically found in bars and convenience stores.

Here is another video showing the “ATM HACK” and the ATM’s playing music and spitting out money

( Video not showing –> : url here :  )

Criminals have been hitting this type of machine for years, using “ATM skimmers” “to record card data and PIN numbers, or in some cases simply pulling up a truck and hauling the machines away.

Tranax has had security problems before. In 2006, CNN reported that a Virginia Beach, Virginia, criminal used a keypad code to reprogram a Tranax machine into thinking it was dispensing $5 bills. Then, using an anonymous prepaid debit card, he withdrew $20 bills, but was only debited for one-quarter of the money he took. A manual showing how to do this, was reportedly available on the web.

Jack had planned to deliver the talk at last year’s conference, but it was pulled after ATM vendors asked for more time to patch the issues he’d discovered.

Ipad index and price comparisons

July 26, 2010 in Big Boys Toys, Gadgets

The Apple iPad is now readily available in 10 countries, and on present exchange rates, Australia is the third least expensive location to buy the brand new gadget.

Ipad in Amazon Australia

With six different models, it can be hard to keep track of what’s available with the iPad and what it costs. The chart below offers a quick reference for you to compare.

iPad

In January 2007 CommSec launched an iPod index as a way of looking at issues such as the impact of currency changes on consumer spending, globalisation and retailer margins. In this latest update we
switch our attention to the Apple iPad in light of their recent world-wide launch. The CommSec iPod index was created as a modern day version of the long-running Big Mac index compiled by
The Economist magazine. Both indexes work on the theory of ‘same good, same price’. That is, the same good
should trade at broadly the same price across the globe if exchange rates are adjusting properly. Interestingly, when expressed in US dollars, the price of the new iPad is identical in Australia, Canada and Japan
and not far away from the pricing in the US. But in the UK, Germany, France and Italy an iPad costs 20-25 per
cent more than in the US. The question is whether Apple has priced its product too high for the European market
or whether the UK pound and Euro need to depreciate further to bring global pricing into line.
Australian travellers to the US can still save money by buying their Apple products while on holiday. Travellers
can help save $24 (12 per cent) on a 8gb iPod nano, $213 (20 per cent) on a 32gb iPhone and $68 on a 64gb Wi-
Fi 3G iPad by purchasing the goods in the US rather than Australia. But overall Aussie gadget lovers have few
reasons to be disappointed regarding the prices they are paying for their shiny new iPads. On current exchange rates

The Difference Between iPad Models
(WiFi vs 3G)

There are two types of iPad to consider – The first model is known as the iPad (cheaper option) and will connect to the internet via WiFi (in your home or at a WiFi hotspot/cafe), and the second model (iPad 3G) will connect to the internet anywhere you can use your mobile phone via a 3G network, and connect in your house via WiFi .Ipad in Amazon Australia

iPads cost $40-60 more in Australia than the US, but if the exchange rate fell to around US80c then prices would

My review of “TomTom XXL 540” in Australia

June 16, 2010 in Amazon, Big Boys Toys, Electronics, Gadgets, Tom Tom

I have been putting  off buying a GPS Unit for quite some time  as i am a bit old fashioned  and  used to looking up maps the old fashioned way. But  i succumbed at last  to new technology when i wet to visit my cuzins in sydney and got to see first hand how useful a GPS ( TomTom XXL 540) could be  , with camera warnings  and all.

After much research i settled for the “

TomTom XXL 540

TomTom XXL 540T (Lifetime Traffic Edition) 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

If you’re a believer in the mantra “size matters” then TomTom’s XXL 540 may just hit the sweet spot. It’s kitted out with the GPS market’s surprise hit of the 2009/2010: a large screen. In this instance, the TomTom has gifted the XXL 540 with a 5-inch screen. Many thanks to the unit’s round corners, curved edges and relative thinness it’s not necessarily as visually imposing as the 5.2-inch Garmin Nuvi 5000 or 5-inch Uniden Trax 5000.

The XXL 540S provides TomTom’s usual impressive navigation features, and adds a roomy 5-inch screen.

Like other current generation TomTom units, the menus have been given a subtle lick of paint, with a bit of anti-aliasing here, a shadow and gradient fill there. Provided that it sports the same 480×272 resolution as TomTom’s 4.3-inch models, the XXL 540 isn’t as sharp or as smooth as it could be. Tapping the map screen’s info boxes gives drivers easy access to two frequently used functions: volume and route overview.

TomTom XXL 540T (Lifetime Traffic Edition) 5-Inch Widescreen Portable GPS Navigator

tomtom_xxl_540s_rear-540x402

Start-up time is very brisk, clocking in at three-and-a-bit seconds. GPS positioning is accurate in the suburbs and out of town, but is the usual lucky dip in the CBD — some days it’ll track you true and proper, on others it’ll occasionally place you a few streets across from where you actually are. As the XXL 540 has no dead reckoning smarts, you’re pretty much on your own when you venture into a tunnel.

DICK SMITH is offering the very new arrived TOMTOM XXL 540 for only $347,In America they are only $269 US dollars, are we being ripped or what.!!! Conversion $297 Oz dollars as of today. The TomTom XXL 540 S improves on the TomTom XL line by maintaining the features we love while improving screen visibility; however the bigger size comes with compromised portability . You can check this out  the  TOMTOM XXL 540 at  Amazon for just $119.95 USD HERE

Lexus LFA 2012 Supercar

June 3, 2010 in Big Boys Toys

The Lexus LFA doesn’t go into production until December, though buyers already include five Australians who were willing to place a deposit for a car that will cost them in the vicinity of $750,000.

The specifications of the new rear-drive Lexus supercar are impressive enough: a 4.8-liter V10 with 560 ps (552 bhp), 354 lb-ft torque, a zingy 9,000 rpm redline, six-speed sequential gearbox, 0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds, and a top speed of 202 mph. It looks amazing too, both in pictures and in person.
